Design Concept:

The animal depicted in this piece is the water buffalo—a creature deeply loved in China, a land historically rooted in agriculture. It represents hard work, perseverance, and contentment. The artwork's base is shaped like half of a gourd, its cross-section resembling a tranquil pool. The water buffalo lies at ease within the gourd-pond, a lotus in its mouth—a scene of quiet joy and serenity.

In classical Chinese, hua (花, flower) shares the same pronunciation as hua (華, brilliance), symbolizing beauty and radiance. The lotus (荷) is a homophone for both harmony (和) and unity (合), making it a blessing of peace and grace.

The gourd itself (葫蘆) signifies fortune and prosperity (福祿). With a water buffalo resting atop, it becomes a metaphor for abundant blessings after dedicated labor. A finely sculpted peony—a flower of wealth and honor—adorns the gourd, while a single lotus floats on the surface of the pool, adding elegance to the richness. The water-filled base suggests flowing, endless wealth.

The entire piece is shaped like a large gold ingot, reinforcing the theme of abundance. After a day of toil, the buffalo rests—symbolizing the reward of hard work and the arrival of a fruitful season.
